Over the years, cars have become more and more sophisticated, and DIY repairs are becoming increasingly more difficult due to the sophisticated and complex engine management systems and prohibitively expensive diagnostic equipment that is seldom within the reach of the average home mechanic.

The Engine Management Light (EML) is designed specifically to indicate a problem with the engine. Should your EML light be shown, then it is important to stop the car as soon as it is safe to do so and check the handbook in the first instance to see if your car is safe to continue driving.

When you refer to your manual, it will often say “take to Main Agent” as they want your custom, and not because nobody else can help. Well, we can certainly help you if you are located within the Torbay area.

Important !

Most Engine Management lights illuminate when the ignition is switched on. It should extinguish as soon as the engine starts, and if it does, then this is normal – do not worry.

If an Engine Management light appears (or fails to extinguish after you've started the engine) you should stop the car as soon as possible in a safe place and refer to the handbook in the first instance. Besides describing the fault, the handbook should also indicate whether it is safe to continue driving or not. In most cases with the light illuminated, the vehicle is usually still safe to drive as long as no other faults are apparent with the engine, but it is important to have the vehicle checked as soon as possible to avoid any damage being caused to the catalytic converter.

If the Engine Management light is flashing, the situation is even worse - emissions are so high that the exhaust gases are likely to damage components on the car. If it flashes when driving, reduce the vehicle speed immediately until the light illuminates constantly. If it continues to flash, avoid heavy acceleration and high engine speed, stop the vehicle and seek immediate assistance.

If it is safe to do so, try stopping the vehicle and switching off the engine. Wait two minutes, and then restart the engine as this will often reset the engine management system. If the light continues to illuminate, then you do have a problem.
