DND Services Ltd :: Project: Chrysler Grand Cherokee 2001

Project: Chrysler Grand Cherokee 2001

Mark wanted something to occupy his two children in the back of his Chrysler grand Cherokee on long journeys, and liked the idea of them being able to watch films, long films, very long films, in fact anything to keep them quiet! He also wanted to know if a playstation could be discreetly added. Certainly not a problem for us

Roof Monitor

As there were generally two passengers in the back of this fairly large vehicle, although occasionally more, to ensure that everybody could see the screen, we decided to use a 6.8" roof mounted folding monitor, that can easily be stowed in the upright position when not in use.

Additional courtesy lights are also a nice feature of this style of screen.

Sideways Glance

This particular screen also has a few other very nice features.

It can swivel from side to side for when only one passenger wishes to view it. A full remote control TV Tuner is also included with built in speakers, and for when the driver wants the kids to listen in silence, the unit can also transmit sound to infra red cordless headphones. Sockets are also fitted to the side for use when playing back camcorder images.

Back in 2001, Options were limited !

These were the 12v VHS Videoplayers of choice, as they were ideally suited for in car use mainly due to the built in heaters to prevent tape damage in cold and damp conditions (condensation causes tape to stick) Remote control is offered by means of a "magic eye" on a long lead that can be positioned in the cabin, away from the main player.

Large, But Easily Hidden

But one of the most useful features of this Videoplayer (certainly for us, the Installers) is that it can be mounted on it`s end, and can therefore be easily hidden in boot compartments.

Centre Console

The Grand Cherokee has a rather large centre console that has a "pop out" cup holder at the base. The dark square that can be seen in the middle of the rear panel is the infra red receiver for the cordless Sony Playstation joypads.

Hide & Seek

Once the cup holder mechanism was removed, the Playstation was attatched in its place. A complex system of cable routing is critical, to prevent any of the wire from fouling as the drawer slides in and out.

The Sony PSOne is superb for in-car use. It is not only much smaller than its predecessor, but it can be converted to run on 12v very easily with a small and inexpensive transformer.
